Welcome to Dreamtime 2009!

It was wonderful to visit the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh campus and meet with many of the people who will be traveling to Australia this year! We are looking forward to another exciting collaborative experience. Along the way we hope to learn more about what makes Australia a unique place in the world. We will be asking our students to work diligently in school to learn as much as they can about Australia's first people...those who are indigenous to the continent. In the next few days we will begin the process of uploading the introductory photos and getting the blog site operational. Please feel free to comment as the need arises. And if you need to contact me, please send email to triverswi@yahoo.com and I will respond asap!

First a little background information...I am John Thompson and I teach social students to about 75 elementary age students in Mishicot, Wisconsin. This summer I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to the Big Island of Hawaii and get a first hand sense of the awesome power of the Pacific Ocean. Enclosed are some shots I took of the Captain Cook Monument that I took during a snorkeling excursion.

On January 17, 1779, Captain James Cook and his crew docked on Kealakekua Bay on the Big Island, during a religious local celebration. The Hawaiians, thinking they were returning gods, gave them a warm welcome and held feasts in their honor. After a while, they realized Cook and his men were mere mortals and killed him on the very spot where they arrived. Today, a monument stands on the shore of Kealakekua to recall the day Cook set foot on Hawaii and made it known to the world.

Our students will be learning more about Captain Cook and his exploration of the Pacific and, specifically, his encounters with Australia!

Keep up the great work! We hope you are as excited as we are in Mishicot, Wisconsin!

John
